Water-based soot scrubbers: how they work and what they treat

Artur Cokaj ·

How water scrubbing separates particulate matter from flue gas, which conditions determine the result, and how to identify the NEWSCRUB AH family from ETC Group S.r.l.

A water-based soot scrubber brings flue gas into contact with a liquid to separate some of the entrained particulate matter. This is a wet treatment process, also known as wet scrubbing. Choosing a unit for a wood-fired oven or charcoal grill requires information about the stream to be treated and the installation. Scrubbing does not turn combustion products into water alone.

How water separates soot from flue gas

Soot particles are captured when they come into contact with water droplets or the scrubber's wetted surfaces. Capture depends on particle size, droplet characteristics and the movement of the stream. Particles separated from the flue gas collect in the liquid, which must be maintained in the condition specified in the manual.

The US EPA explains how wet scrubbers work and describes systems with different characteristics and energy requirements. Their effectiveness on fine particles varies with the technology and operating conditions. Water pressure, nozzle type and spray distribution must therefore match the machine's design.

The path of the flue gas and liquid

  1. Flue gas enters the treatment unit at the flow rate and temperature specified in the design.
  2. Contact with the liquid captures some of the particles; effectiveness and pressure drop depend on operating conditions.
  3. The stream continues towards the installation's designated discharge. The liquid collects the separated contaminants and requires inspection, cleaning and replacement as specified in the manual.

This sequence describes the general principle. On its own, it does not identify a model's internal geometry, nozzle count or equipment. Consult the relevant documentation for the construction of an ETC machine.

Efficiency and temperature: check the conditions

A removal percentage is meaningful when it states which contaminant was measured and under what conditions. A reduction in dust mass does not automatically demonstrate the same reduction in particle number, finer fractions or odours. Attributing a result to a product requires a relevant test report and identification of the configuration tested.

Outlet temperature also varies: initial conditions and heat exchange with the water matter. The EPA technical manual on wet scrubbers for particulate matter, in its historical 2002 edition, discusses these physical principles. It is neither an ETC performance data sheet nor a source of Italian regulatory requirements.

The NEWSCRUB AH family from ETC Group

ETC Group S.r.l. offers the NEWSCRUB AH family for water-based treatment, under the BIOMASS and ROASTER names. The family name helps identify the technology; model selection remains tied to the documented application. Consult the solutions for wood-fired ovens and the soot scrubber range, then check the technical data sheet and manual in the ETC documents.

What information is needed to choose a unit

A useful assessment requires the appliance and fuel type, flue gas flow rate under actual conditions, temperature, duct route and dimensions, existing extraction fan and available space. Connection diameter alone is not enough to size the treatment unit. The sizing guide explains how to collect the data; the ETC technical contact allows you to submit it together with photographs of the installation.
